The Fruits of My Labor

One of my favorites to turn is wild cherry. The wood is close grained, dense and really smalls nice when you are turning it. It’s not the only fruitwood I turn though. I just turned this cherry bowl this week. It has a bell shaped rim which is kind of fun to turn.

Another interesting fruitwood is pear. This small pear jewelry dish has an interesting story (and a new owner) but you can still see it in Sold But Not Forgotten. The wood is hard as a rock. Very dense grain and smooth like a polished stone. I have a little of it left and will make another bowl soon.

I just put up a plum wood bowl today. The short section of log was buried in my “wood room” in a laundry basket with other odd pieces waiting to be turned. It too has a bell shaped rim.

And then there’s mulberry which may be my favorite “fruit” wood. I’m particularly fond of the mulberry burl. Below is one I just made the other day.

So I’ve shown you some of the fruits (of my labor) just don’t get me started on the nuts (walnut, hickory, pecan….).
